The film marks the return of director Borys Lankosz, who won a raft of Polish and international awards for his 2009 debut Reverse.

A Grain of Truth follows the inimitable Prosecutor Teodor Szacki, played by Robert Wieckiewicz (Walesa: Man of Hope, In Darkness) as he tries to solve a savage murder in the sleepy medieval town of Sandomierz.

The unexpected crime raises ghosts from Poland's Jewish past.

''A Grain of Truth has everything that interests me in cinema: an important topic, a gripping intrigue, a fantastic, remarkable hero and a brilliant construction,'' Lankosz has said.

Best-selling author Zygmunt Miloszewski, whose works have been translated into several languages including English and Hebrew, joined forces with Lankosz to adapt the tale for the silver screen.

The director has said that there are many ''wisely written dialogues that tell us a lot about Poland, its history, but also about our traumas and complexes.''

A Grain of Truth goes on general release in Poland on 23 January. (nh)
