The festival, which bills itself as “the greatest and most recognized festival dedicated to the art of cinematography,” draws on Poland's reputation as a producer of outstanding cameramen.

Caleb Deschanel, who won the lifetime achievement award at Camerimage this year, has been nominated for an Oscar five times, owing to his work on The Right Stuff (1983), The Natural (1984), Fly Away Home (1996 ), The Patriot (2000) and The Passion of Christ (2004).

Alan Rickman (Die Hard, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and the Harry Potter movies), was presented with a gong for outstanding achievement in acting.

In the main competition of Camerimage this year, 15 movies are competing for the Gold, Silver and Bronze Frog Awards.

“From the very beginning the idea behind the competition has been to present feature films with images that significantly contribute to the way stories are told,” the festival stresses.

Films competing this year include Hollywood WWII epic Fury, as well as Polish box office hit Gods, the latter looking at the efforts to perform the first heart transplant in Poland.

The 22 Camerimage Festival runs until 22 November. (nh)
