No Oscar for 'Wałęsa - Man of Hope’ biopic

Director Andrzej Wajda’s ‘Wałęsa. Man of Hope’ is not among the nine films which have advanced to the next round of voting for 'Best Foreign Language Film' at the Academy Awards.

The short-list includes the Austrian film ‘Amour’, directed by Michael Haneke and a top-prize winner at the Cannes Festival, Romania’s ‘Beyond the Hills’, Canada’s ‘War Witch’ and films by French, Swiss, Danish, Icelandic, Chilean and Norwegian directors.

A total of 71 features entered the competition and a final shortlist of five nominees will be announced on 6 January, with the 86th Academy Awards ceremony taking place on 2 March in Los Angeles.

In his long career, director Andrzej Wajda, who received a lifetime achievement Oscar in 2000, will be 88 years-old in March 2014 and has received four Oscar nominations, for ‘The Promised Land’ (1975), ‘The Maids of Wilko’ (1979), ‘’Man of Iron’ (1981) and ‘Katyń’ (2007). (mk/pg)
