The work is performed by a piano trio led by Pawlik, the American trumpeter Randy Brecker and the Kalisz Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Adam Klocek.
It was Klocek who commissioned Pawlik to write the piece for the 1850th anniversary of the town of Kalisz in western Poland.

"I am delighted with the news of a Grammy nomination," Klocek told the Polish Press Agency, adding that it will be great publicity for the town.

He said that ‘Night in Calisia’, recorded on the Summit Records label, was included in the list of 50 most performed CDs on all US jazz radio stations.

Wlodek Pawlik is one of Poland’s top jazz pianists and composers. His film scores include Peter Greenway’s ‘Nightwatching’ and several features by leading Polish directors.

‘Night in Calisia’ is Pawlik’s second collaboration with Randy Brecker: the previous one resulted in the album ‘Tykocin Jazz Suite’, one of twenty CDs in Pawlik’s discography. (mk/pg)
