The volume, which will be published in Polish under the title Slawa i Fortuna (Fame and Fortune), covers the period 1972 to 1987, when the writer's international stature soared.

Lem's American translator Michael Kandel took on some of the writer's most celebrated works, including The Cyberiad and Fiasco.

Publisher Wydawnictwo Literackie enthuses that “nowhere else does the author offer such an explicit analysis of his work.”

According to Lem expert Professor Jerzy Jarzebski, besides his characteristic wit, the book reveals the author's success at “not compromising intellectual integrity and artistic excellence,” as his star rose ever higher.

Lem lived most of his life in Krakow, southern Poland, and the book will be released on October 17, just before this year's Krakow Book Fair. (nh)
