Thomas Simaku wins Lutosławski Competition

Albanian-born British composer Thomas Simaku is the winner of the Witold Lutosławski Composers’ Competition, one of numerous events marking Lutosławski Year in the centenary of the Polish composer’s birth.
Simaku’s award-winning Concerto for Orchestra will be performed at the final concert of the Warsaw Autumn Festival in September.
Second Prize went to Chris Roe of Britain for ‘Lavoisier's Mirrors’ and Third Prize to the Russian composer Natalia Tchepuluk for ‘Aria II’.
Grzegorz Michalski, chairman of the Lutosławski Society, a co-organiser of the competition, alongside the Polish Composers’ Union and the Institute of Music and Dance, has told a press conference that the worldwide interest in the competition has surpassed all expectations.
A total of 160 works for large orchestra have been submitted to the international jury by composers from Argentina, Armenia, Australia, Bolivia, China Georgia, Spain, Iran, Israel, Canada, Germany, Russia, the U.K., Serbia, the United States and Poland.
The jury included composers from Poland, Italy, Finland and the United States.
Born in 1958 in Albania, Thomas Simaku emigrated to Britain in 1991. He has received a doctorate in composition from the University of York, where he is currently a member of faculty. (mk/pg)
