Composer Przemysław Gintrowski, famous for the protest song Walls (Mury) during the Solidarity-era has died at the age of 61.

He wrote the 'poetic programme' Walls together with Jacek Kaczmarski and Zbigniew Łapiński, with music based on a Catalonian composition by Lluis Llach L'Esta and the song rose to be the unofficial anthem of Solidarność trade union.

During the years of martial law in Poland he was a performer of the underground cultural circuit.

A good number of the songs of Przemysław Gintrowski were based on lyrics by Jacek Kaczmarski, as well as many contemporary Polish poets and writers.

Gintrowski is also remembered as the composer of film scores, theme songs and stage music. He also taught at the Warsaw Film School.

In 2006, President Lech Kaczyński awarded him with the Cavalier's Cross of the Order of Reborn Poland. (ek/pg)
