The name of the festival refers to the Nobel prize winning author, the late Isaac Bashevis Singer, whose career began in Warsaw a city which before WW2 had the third largest Jewish community in the world.

The first festival was organised on the centenary of Singer's birth in 2004.

The opening concert at the Synagogue featured a performance by tenor Jacov Lemmer, with the festival featuring over 200 events covering many areas of Jewish culture, both contemporary and historical. including literature, theatre and music.

Artists staring at the festival, which continues till 2 September, include American vocalist Joshua Nelson, cantors Alberto Mizrahi, Benzion Miller and Yaakov Lemmer with the Sifthey Noham Choir from Jerusalem. (pg/ek)
