The Polish Foreign Ministry is increasing its presence on social networking site Twitter, with the number of embassies and consulates taking part brought to 138 over the last two months.

“Under my leadership, Polish diplomacy will not ignore modernity,” Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski underlined while presenting the annual report on Poland's consular service last week.

Besides the individual pages of diplomatic missions on Twitter, the ministry has also launched a new page on the site called “Polak za granica” (The Pole Abroad).

The page provides regular updates concerning countries that have serious security risks or that are unexpectedly stricken by a crisis.

Sikorski cited the evacuation of Poles from Libya, Tunisia and Egypt during the “Arab Spring” as one of the greatest challenges for Polish consular officials in recent times.

Meanwhile, the minister already has his own personal Twitter page, counting over 46,000 followers.

“When world media outlets cite my entries on the subject of elections in Russia, a visit to Libya or repression in Belarus, it shows the effectiveness of the medium,” he argued.

“Diplomacy is no longer [a kind of] 19th century sorcery, where old gentlemen with secretive expressions sit behind a series of curtains, smoking cigars,” he said. (nh)
