According to the armed forces press department, the arrest of what they claim is a “dangerous terrorist” took place last week.

The detained man, Maulawi Muhammed Wali, is reportedly “extremely well known to coalition soldiers.”

The Polish military claims that among other actions, he is responsible for the attack on a Polish patrol in January this year which resulted in the deaths of two Polish soldiers.

Last week's operation was carried out at night by Polish Special Force soldiers together with officers of the Afghan Special Police Force.

According to the Polish military, the target was “completely taken by surprise” and “did not resist” when troops burst into his home.

The Polish army says that the action “clearly indicates the increasingly effective cooperation between the Afghan government with the Polish soldiers stationed in the Ghazni province.”

At present, 2600 Polish military personnel are at large in Afghanistan, and 400 troops are on reserve in Poland. The numbers are due to be slightly reduced by 300, with just 200 waiting in reserve.

To date, 31 Poles have died in the country since the conflict began ten years ago. (nh/pg)
