Media reports suggest that among the many tourists hiking yesterday, three Poles, including Kuzniar, Jacek Kranz and experienced climber Marek Glogoczowski, also left for a day’s walk.

However, after information of oncoming foul weather, Glogoczowski decided to head home, leaving Kuzniar and Kranz to carry on with the walk.

Emergency services were alerted to the missing climbers at around 20.00 local time, although any rescue attempts were not undertaken until this morning due to severe weather.

“Professor Kuzniar and Jacek Kranz are in good condition, only sustaining mild frostbite,” Joanna Trzaska-Wieczorek from the Presidential Chancellery told TVP Info news on Friday.

“They were transported by helicopter to hospital where they will remain under observation for a few days. They were well equipped, prepared for the hike, and Professor Kuzniar had already informed us that he wanted to climb Elbrus,” she continued.

Mount Elbrus, which is located in the western Caucasus on the border with Georgia, has two peaks – 5642 metres above sea level and 5621 metres above sea level respectively. (jb)
