Poland opposes cuts in EU cohesion policy

Poland has reiterated its opposition to cutting cohesion policy funds in the European Union’s new budget after 2020, a news agency has reported.

At a meeting in Luxembourg on Tuesday about the bloc’s future spending, Polish Investment and Development Minister Jerzy Kwieciński said his country could not agree to cuts proposed by the European Commission in cohesion policy and shifting the money to new goals such as defence and migration policy.
Kwieciński was cited by public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency as saying that cohesion policy should be used to even out differences between regions in the EU, rather than to solve other current problems arising in the bloc.
The European Commission last year proposed around 23 percent less cohesion policy funds for Poland under the bloc’s 2021-2027 budget, according to reports.
Poland is the largest recipient of European Union cohesion funds under the bloc’s 2014-2020 budget.
The EU's cohesion policy aims to support job creation, business competitiveness, economic growth and sustainable development as well as improve quality of life for citizens, according to the European Commission.
