The leaders of the EU member states on Thursday unanimously decided to extend the bloc’s economic sanctions against Russia over that country’s actions in Ukraine, a news agency reported.

The leaders, gathered at a summit in Brussels, extended the sanctions by another six months, Poland’s PAP news agency reported.
The decision was taken in response to Moscow’s failure to fully implement the Minsk agreements, a peace deal that Russia has made with Ukraine, Germany and France as part of efforts to end conflict in eastern Ukraine.
The restrictions particularly affect Russia’s financial, energy and defence sectors. They restrict access to EU capital markets for Russia's largest financial institutions, energy companies and defence industries.
The EU imposed sanctions on Russia after it annexed Ukraine’s Crimea peninsula in 2014.
