The meeting of the Council of the Baltic Sea States in the Latvian seaside town of Jūrmala focused on plans for reforming this form of regional cooperation, according to the Polish foreign ministry.
“Baltic cooperation should better reflect the new reality,” Polish Foreign Minister Jacek Czaputowicz told his counterparts from other Baltic Sea countries during Monday’s meeting, as quoted by the foreign ministry in Warsaw.
“We should create a platform for regional Baltic dialogue that would allow us to raise all issues relevant to the region’s future,” Czaputowicz was quoted as saying.
The gathering near the Latvian capital Riga concluded with the adoption of a joint declaration and a road map for reforming the Council of the Baltic Sea States, the Polish foreign ministry said on its website.
The Council of the Baltic Sea States, established in 1992, is a regional cooperation initiative that brings together all Baltic Sea countries—Poland, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Russia and Sweden—plus Norway and Iceland.
While in Latvia, the Polish foreign minister met with the director of NATO’s Riga-based Strategic Communications Centre of Excellence (StratCom), Jānis Sārts, for talks on hybrid threats, the use of social media for disinformation purposes, and the risks of external interference in elections, the Polish foreign ministry also said.
