Morawiecki said Poland wanted “to eliminate the temptation of protectionism", which makes it hard for Polish firms to compete in Western Europe.

He added: “There should be as little protectionism and inequality as possible, which do not provide a good platform for cooperation and competitiveness of the whole EU.”

The informal summit of heads of state or government of the European Union in Sibiu, Romania brought together leaders from 27 countries to discuss the EU’s strategy until 2024, including issues such as the bloc’s budget, security and technology.

The leaders said in a declaration: “We will continue to protect our way of life, democracy and the rule of law.”

The declaration added: “We will continue working with our partners in the world to uphold and develop the rules-based international order, to make the most of new trading opportunities and to jointly tackle global issues such as preserving our environment and fighting climate change.”
