Poland supports Georgia’s EU, NATO hopes: president

Polish President Andrzej Duda has said his country will continue to support Georgia’s aspirations to join the EU and NATO.

Duda was speaking after talks in Warsaw on Tuesday with Georgia’s President Salome Zourabichvili, who is on an official visit to Poland.
Duda said that Georgia has wanted to join the European Union and the Western military alliance “for years, and those who support the ongoing democratic processes in Georgia share a common stance on this issue.”
Zourabichvili “is one of those people,” Duda added.
Duda said he hoped the two countries would strengthen business ties.
Zourabichvili was on Tuesday scheduled to meet the Speakers of the upper and lower houses of the Polish parliament.
She was also expected to lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in central Warsaw and at a monument to the victims of the 2010 Polish presidential plane crash.
On Tuesday afternoon, she was due to take part in a debate entitled “Ten years of the Eastern Partnership. Lessons for Georgia and Poland.”
The Eastern Partnership, an initiative by Poland and Sweden, was launched in 2009 to forge closer political and economic ties between the European Union and its eastern neighbours Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine.
