Poland to focus on human rights at helm of UN Security Council

Poland’s foreign minister has said his country will focus on human rights during its one-month presidency of the United Nations Security Council in August.

While on a trip to the United States, Jacek Czaputowicz on Monday took part in a meeting of the council in New York to discuss the observance of human rights laws.
Czaputowicz said that not all countries respect human rights, citing Syria as an example. He said the Syrian regime has resorted to using chemical weapons, causing civilians to suffer.
The presidency of the UN Security Council is held by each of its member countries in turn for one month.
Czaputowicz said ahead of his US trip that while in the United States he would discuss security in the Middle East, which was the focus of an international conference in Warsaw in February.
He was also cited as saying that his trip would be an opportunity to emphasise the importance of NATO.
The Polish foreign minister is set to visit Washington on Wednesday and Thursday as the Western military alliance celebrates its 70th anniversary.
Amid fears of Russian aggression following Moscow's annexation of the Crimea region of Ukraine in 2014, NATO decided at a Warsaw summit in July 2016 to deploy four rotating multinational battalions to Poland and the Baltic states.
