He told a press conference in Berlin that he would address election rallies of the Democratic Left Alliance, and of the newly-formed Spring party of Robert Biedroń, Poland’s first openly gay politician.
“Nobody can say I’m an unknown figure in Poland,” Timmermans told reporters.
He also had some warm words to say about the social policies of Poland’s conservative government.
Asked what lies behind the success of “right-wing populists” in Europe, Timmermans responded: “Not everything that they are doing is bad.”
He said that the Law and Justice government in Poland did the right thing by emphasising social policy.
“It was necessary. The previous government neglected this area,” Timmermans added.
In addition to Poland, Timmermans’s campaign trail will take him to his native Netherlands as well as to Germany, Italy and Spain. (mk/pk)
