Italy’s Salvini to meet head of Poland’s ruling conservatives

Italian daily la Repubblica reported last week that Salvini and Jarosław Kaczyński, the head of Poland’s governing Law and Justice (PiS) party, would discuss striking a deal ahead of elections to the European Parliament in May.

Salvini, who is also a deputy prime minister, is the leader of the right-wing League party, one of the two in Italy’s ruling coalition.

Ahead of Salvini’s visit to Warsaw, Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Konrad Szymański said that the Italian government was the “forerunner of change” in Europe.

Szymański said that the political landscape was changing in Europe and Poland should look for potential partners in order to carry out reforms in the EU.

Szymański was asked if Poland’s Law and Justice could, after May elections to the European Parliament, create a group that includes Salvini’s anti-immigrant League party.

Szymański replied that PiS and the League had some similarities but also some differences.

While in Warsaw, Salvini was also set to hold talks with Polish Interior Minister Joachim Brudziński.
