The man, a resident of Switzerland, faces up to 20 years in jail. He denies any wrongdoing.

Jakub Fabian S. (full name withheld under Polish privacy laws) was detained and charged in August after meeting suspected rebels in the Papua province.

According to prosecutors, the Pole had met leaders of the Free Papua Organisation and was found with documents and a video detailing the Papuan struggle for independence.

The man claims he was visiting Indonesia as a tourist and did not know any of the people listed by prosecutors.

His trial is to resume on January 14.
