EU extends sanctions on Russia over Ukraine

European Union leaders on Thursday agreed to extend the bloc's economic sanctions against Russia over that country’s actions in Ukraine, a news agency reported.

The sanctions will be extended by another six months, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.
European Council President Donald Tusk, who was chairing the summit of the bloc’s leaders in Brussels, tweeted on Thursday: “EU unanimously prolongs economic sanctions against Russia given zero progress in implementation of Minsk agreements.”
The Minsk agreements are a peace deal that Russia has made with Ukraine, Germany and France as part of efforts to end conflict in eastern Ukraine.
Russia last month seized three Ukrainian navy ships in the Kerch Strait, a body of water near the annexed Crimea peninsula, leading to widespread calls in Europe and the United States for sanctions against Moscow to be toughened, the Reuters news agency reported.
The Polish foreign minister said last week that there was a deepening dispute between Russia and Western countries over developments affecting the international community.
CNN has reported that the United States has begun making preparations to sail a warship into the Black Sea amid Russia-Ukraine tensions.
