Poland’s top diplomat, Jacek Czaputowicz, said on Monday the foreign ministry in Warsaw had obtained confirmation that eight Poles had been abducted.
Radio broadcaster RMF FM reported that the pirates struck on Saturday around 4am.
Some 60 nautical miles off the coast, two motorboats approached the Pomerania Sky ship as it was sailing from Angola to the Nigerian port of Onne, according to RMF FM.
The hijackers climbed on board, but the crew managed to get a radio message out. The pirates also kidnapped two Filipinos and a Ukrainian, RMF FM reported.
The German owner of the ship is to conduct negotiations to secure the release of the crew, Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.
It added that the ship was sailing under a Liberian flag.
