The money will come from the European Union Solidarity Fund, which was set up in 2002 to provide assistance to countries suffering natural disasters.

Financial aid will also be given to Greece, Lithuania and Bulgaria, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.

Gales damaged hundreds of homes and wrought havoc in forests in Poland's north and west on August 11 and 12, 2017. Six people died and dozens were injured.

Tens of thousands of hectares of forests were destroyed, IAR reported.

Foresters have estimated that efforts to clear up areas struck by the violent winds will continue until the middle of next year.
