Law enforcers in Lithuania have detained nine people suspected of issuing false certificates to foreigners applying for permanent residency in that country, Polish news media have reported.

According to authorities in Lithuania, the suspects provided illegal assistance to foreigners by falsely attesting to their fluency in Lithuanian and their familiarity with the country’s constitution, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.

Such practices could have posed a threat to the security of both Lithuania and other European Union countries, including neighbouring Poland, potentially by facilitating terrorism and espionage activities, IAR reported, citing the Baltic News Service (BNS).

Those detained include members of a Lithuanian language commission in the country’s southeastern Vilnius region and officials sitting on a state examination board charged with evaluating whether foreigners seeking permanent residency status are familiar with the Lithuanian constitution, IAR said.
