Poland and Hungary have opposed new rules for so-called posted workers that were backed by the majority of European Union labour ministers in Luxembourg on Thursday.

Polish Deputy Labour Minister Stanisław Szwed said changes to the European Union’s rules were unnecessary and damaging.
He said the new rules “will lead to the process of sending workers abroad [being] more difficult” and that the rules infringed on the European Union principle of freedom to provide services.
According to the Council of the European Union, the new rules guarantee that workers who are employed in their home country but are sent abroad for work are paid at least the minimum wage of the country in which they are working.
The new rules aim “at ensuring fair wages and a level playing field between posting and local companies in the host country whilst maintaining the principle of free movement of services,” the council said.
Poland has said the changes would hit its transport industry, making it lose its edge in western European markets. (vb/pk)
