Speaking at the opening of the event on Saturday, Duda said trade between Poland and Georgia grew by a third in recent years. He added that there was potential for greater collaboration, however, certain conditions needed to be met first.

“Firstly, security and peace,” he said. “Without them no development is possible and even conflict in a neighbouring region translates to instability, costs and hampered growth.”

“Secondly, social cohesion, as growth should not take place at the expense of society,” Duda added.

Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili, who also took the floor on Saturday, called Georgia “a gateway between Europe and Asia.”

The economic forum is held as part of celebrations marking 100 years since the establishment of Georgia’s First Democratic Republic.

Kvirikashvili thanked Poland for “its support and presence at such an important occasion.”

The main ceremony marking the anniversary was attended by the presidents of Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Slovakia, Finland and Armenia, alongside European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker.
