The Latvian embassy in Moscow has been pelted with smoke grenades and flares, Latvia’s foreign minister has said.

“Embassy of Latvia in Russia was attacked this evening, two persons have been detained,” Edgars Rinkēvičs said on Twitter on Wednesday.

He added that “Latvia strongly condemns such provocations and demands Russia to fully ensure security of Latvia’s diplomatic missions in accordance with international law.”

The incident occurred when five people approached the embassy building and threw several smoke grenades and flares in its direction, Poland’s niezalezna.pl website reported, citing Delfi, a major online news service in the Baltic states.

The detained individuals are activists of an unregistered Russian nationalist organisation known as The Other Russia and formerly called the National Bolshevik Party, niezalezna.pl said, citing independent Russian television broadcaster Dozhd.

The incident followed the detention by Latvian security services of a pro-Russian activist named Vladimir Linderman, a member of the former National Bolshevik Party, Dozhd has reported, as quoted by niezalezna.pl.
