While the road to NATO membership is a long one for many countries and “nothing is going to happen instantly … we want your membership in NATO, let me assure you,” Hutchison said in Kiev on Thursday, as quoted by the ukrinform.net website.

She also said that Ukraine’s newly approved Annual National Programme of cooperation with the Western defence alliance was the next step that NATO and Ukraine could take together, Poland’s niezalezna.pl news service has reported.

The Annual National Programme is a good tool for Ukraine to continue making progress toward securing NATO membership, Hutchison added, according to niezalezna.pl.

Hutchison on Thursday took part in the Kyiv Security Forum, an annual meeting of politicians and experts dealing with international security issues.

Meanwhile, Ukraine’s President Petro Poroshenko said on Thursday that his country would insist on securing a Membership Action Plan, a formal step toward joining NATO, according to niezalezna.pl.

Hutchison said that before joining the alliance Ukraine should carry out reforms to bring the country closer to NATO member state standards, niezalezna.pl reported.
