NATO member Latvia said it had been forced to partly close its air space because of the drills, news agencies reported.
Latvian Prime Minister Maris Kucinskis was cited as saying that the Russian exercises were “a demonstration of force.”
“It is hard to comprehend that it can happen so close to (our) country,” Kucinskis said, as quoted by the Reuters news agency.
Sweden's authorities have issued a warning to civilian ships and said there could be delays and disruption to commercial air traffic, Reuters reported.
The Russian drills were due to run until Friday.
