During her visit to the Polish Social and Cultural Association (POSK) in London on Thursday, May spoke to Polish employees, business owners, charity workers and academics about Britain's planned exit from the European Union next year, onet.pl said.

Businesswoman and investor Marta Krupińska, the only Polish woman on the Evening Standard's 2017 list of most influential Londoners, was cited by the onet.pl website as saying that May reiterated friendly slogans but made no specific promises.

But sociologist Roch Dunin-Wąsowicz of the London School of Economics said May was genuinely concerned with the Polish community in the UK, according to onet.pl.

Dunin-Wąsowicz noted that Polish is the second most commonly spoken language after English in the UK, onet.pl said.

Some 3.3 million European Union citizens are living in the UK, among them about a million Poles, who account for the country's largest ethnic minority, onet.pl reported.

Britain is expected to leave the bloc in March next year.
