Polish PM to discuss rule of law in Brussels

The politicians are to hold talks on ways to resolve an ongoing dispute between Warsaw and Brussels that erupted following controversial judicial changes by the Polish government.

At the end of last year, the European Commission took the unprecedented step of triggering Article 7 of the EU Treaty against Poland, stepping up pressure on Warsaw over contested reforms to Poland’s courts by the country’s ruling conservatives.

Poland's governing Law and Justice party has argued that sweeping changes are needed to reform what they claim is an inefficient and sometimes corrupt judicial system tainted by the communist past.

During his last visit to Brussels less than two weeks ago, Morawiecki said he would hold talks with the European Commission soon and present a “white book” explaining the reforms in Poland. He said this would be “a legally sound, thorough analysis of our position towards all of [Brussels’] recommendations and reservations.”

On Thursday afternoon, Morawiecki is to hold the floor at the Brussels Forum, an annual gathering focusing on political and economic issues affecting the United States and Europe. (aba/pk)
