Polish Deputy Prime Minister Piotr Gliński has met his Ukrainian counterpart Pavlo Rozenko in Warsaw to discuss thorny historical issues amid soured relations over a new Polish anti-defamation law.

The officials discussed a Ukrainian ban on exhuming the remains of Polish victims of crimes in that country.

The ban was imposed last year after a monument was taken down in eastern Poland. The monument was to the Ukrainian Insurgent Army which, according to Polish researchers, carried out mass killings in Nazi German-occupied Poland.

Rozenko said he and Gliński also discussed a contested new Polish law that allows criminal proceedings to be launched against anyone who denies crimes committed by Ukrainian nationalists between 1925 and 1950, such as the Volhynia Massacre during World War II, a black page in Polish-Ukrainian relations.

Rozenko said: "We discussed many important topics in Ukrainian-Polish relations, including the threats arising from the new [Polish] law, the rights and freedoms of Ukrainians in Poland, the reconstruction of devastated and destroyed sites of remembrance, planned conferences, meetings, consultations and research. Dialogue and cooperation will be continued.”
