A 33-year-old Latvian man who had been supporting Ukraine’s anti-Russian defenders has allegedly been killed in Guernsey in the English Channel, the Eighth Battalion of the Ukrainian Volunteer Army has said.

In a statement on Facebook, the battalion said that Guernsey resident Mikus Alps had been “shot, killed, tied up and burned” in the car he had been using to transport thermal underwear and bulletproof vests to Ukraine.
The statement claimed that Moscow was behind the death and that Alps had helped to transport cars and equipment to volunteers fighting in Ukraine after Russia annexed the Crimean peninsula in 2014.
According to Guernsey police, a burned out car with suspected skeletal remains was found on 8 January.

The police also said that Alps had been missing since the early hours of the same day.
Guernsey police added that further examination would be needed to confirm that the remains were human and to identify the car’s owner, while the BBC reported forensic examinations could take weeks.
Police also said they received a "sombre and reflective" letter purportedly written by Alps and that they are working on verifying the man's handwriting. (vb)
