Semjen was speaking after the European Commission earlier in the day took the unprecedented step of triggering Article 7 of the EU Treaty against Poland, stepping up pressure on Warsaw over controversial changes to the judicial system by the country’s ruling conservatives.
Semjen said it was unacceptable for Brussels to exert pressure on sovereign EU member states and to arbitrarily punish democratically elected governments, according to Poland’s PAP news agency.
Sanctions on Warsaw under Article 7 would have to be backed unanimously by EU member states, while Hungary has repeatedly said in the past that it would not support sanctions.
