EU official urges Poland to ensure security for MEPs

European Parliament President Antonio Tajani said on Monday he would ask Poland’s prime minister to ensure security for MEPs after nationalists hung the portraits of six Polish eurodeputies on a mock gallows.
During a demonstration on Saturday in Katowice, southern Poland, nationalists “hung” the pictures of MEPs who backed a recent European Parliament warning to Warsaw amid concerns in Brussels that the Polish government has eroded the independence of the judiciary and fundamental rights.
Poland’s conservative government has denied that it has undermined the rule of law.
Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro said on Monday that prosecutors would investigate the mock hanging. Police are analysing video footage of the incident.
Tajani wrote on Twitter: “I will write to [Polish] PM Beata Szydlo to ensure the security of elected Members of the European Parliament to express their opinions independently, without threat and oppose those who spread hatred by exhibiting outrageous pictures of hanged politicians.”
After a debate earlier this month, the European Parliament warned Poland that it could have its voting rights in the Council of the European Union suspended.
