US President praises Polish patriots at UN General Assembly

US President Donald Trump has praised Polish war-time patriotism in his maiden address to the United Nations General Assembly, and Poland’s foreign minister said it was an important sign.

Speaking in New York on Tuesday, Trump said “patriotism led the Poles to die to save Poland,” adding: “Now we are calling for a great reawakening of nations, for the revival of their spirits, their pride, their people, and their patriotism”.
Speaking to Polish state broadcaster TVP, Polish Foreign Minister Witold Waszczykowski said Trump’s reference to Poland was a “nice surprise”.
“The president of the United States was in Warsaw a few months ago so there was no longer a need for him to make a gesture of acknowledgement to Poles,” Waszczykowski said.
During his speech, Trump also tried to sell other countries on his America First election-campaign rhetoric, suggesting that all countries should put their sovereignty first, and quoting former US President Harry Truman, who said: ”The success of the United Nations depends upon the independent strength of its members.” (vb)
