EU agrees Italy needs help with migrant crisis

Italy needs extra support as it faces “extraordinary pressure” as a result of the migrant crisis, the EU has said at the Frontex border guard agency's Warsaw headquarters.

At the meeting, called at Italy’s request, Rome said it wanted some migrants to be transferred to other EU countries.
The EU agreed to set up a working group to assess the situation in the Mediterranean Sea and Frontex urged EU members to stand by their pledges to send experts and technical equipment to Italian shores.
Some 400 EU officers and support staff, as well as 12 vessels and seven aircraft, are helping Italy handle the large numbers of migrants crossing the Mediterranean Sea.
More than two million African and Middle Eastern migrants have arrived in southern Europe since 2015. (vb/pk)
