“None from the group of Polish tourists was harmed. Forty-six were transferred to a sports centre in Mazagon while 11 decided to go to nearby localities of their own accord,” a foreign ministry spokesman said.

Some 2,000 people on Saturday evacuated homes, campgrounds and hotels near the town of Moguer when a forest fire, which was being treated as a maximum threat.

About 550 firefighters and soldiers, as well as 21 aircraft, fought the blaze.

Its cause remains unknown.

A heat wave has put most of Spain and surrounding areas at risk of fires. Neighbouring Portugal recently suffered its own forest fire, which killed 64 people as they tried to escape. (vb)
