Polish Foreign Minister Witold Waszczykowski has said that Moscow invited Warsaw to discuss security issues following Poland's appointment as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council.

Waszczykowski said that after the appointment on Friday, Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov sent his congratulations, and proposed a bilateral meeting between deputy foreign ministers from the two countries.

“I take these congratulations as a good sign, and I will try to organise this meeting before we start working within the Security Council in January 2018,” Waszczykowski said, adding that “perhaps there will be many explanations, perhaps [related to] Smolensk”.

A Polish presidential plane crashed in Smolensk western Russia in 2010 killing all the 96 passengers on board, including president Lech Kaczyński.

Despite several requests to return the wreckage, Russia is still in possession of the plane, claiming it is conducting an independent investigation.

The Polish government recently opened its own investigation into the crash. The commission probing the incident has indicated suspicions that there was an explosion on board. (rg)
