Poland will work with all parties to the Paris climate accord, including the US, the Polish environment ministry has said after America quit the pact, saying it would come back on better terms.

US President Donald Trump said he would start negotiations to return to the Paris deal “on terms that are fair to the United States, its businesses, its workers, its people, its taxpayers”.

Trump, who came to power on an “America first” pledge, has said the current Paris deal would undermine the US economy and cost US jobs. He has also said climate change was a hoax. The US is one of the world's largest producers of carbon emissions.

Trump's decision to abandon the Paris deal drew anger and disappointment from leaders from Japan, Germany, France and Brussels and others.

Paweł Mucha, a spokesman for Poland's environment ministry, said the 2015 Paris agreement is important to Poland and is a chance for balanced global development.

“The environment ministry accepts US President Donald Trump's decision to back out of the Paris climate agreement... Poland declares cooperation with all parties to the climate convention, including the US,” Mucha said.

Coal-dependent Poland, which is home to two of Europe's top 10 most polluting power plants, was last in an April ranking of countries by progress towards achieving climate change goals under the Paris agreement, conducted by Carbon Market Watch.

The aim of the UN climate accord known as the Paris agreement is to keep the increase in global average temperatures below two degrees Celsius compared to the pre-industrial era and to continue efforts to limit temperature increases to 1.5 degrees. (vb/pk)
