European officials said that the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) free trade deal was important. Negotiations towards the deal have been suspended since the inauguration of the US president, who has a protectionist economic policy.

Tusk and Trump also failed to see eye to eye on Russia, the European Council head said, but Tusk added: “When it comes to conflict in Ukraine I believe we have the same opinion”.

Tusk said that the most important task ahead was to consolidate the free world around the fundamental values of freedom, human rights and respect for human dignity. (vb/pk)
