Polish Catholic cardinal Stanisław Ryłko said Mass at the Vatican on Sunday to mark the 12th anniversary of the death of Polish-born Pope Saint John Paul II.

Polish religious devotees and Polish Church delegates to Rome and the Vatican took place in the religious service, which was held at the late Pope's grave.

Among the congregation was also Polish Archbishop Konrad Krajewski, who served John Paul II as papal master of ceremonies and Papal Almoner. He also served Pope Benedict XVI and Pope Francis.

Today marks the 12th death anniversary of John Paul II, proclaimed a saint by the Catholic Church.

Meanwhile, in Poland, numerous religious remembrance events and concerts were held in memory of the pope, and a blood donation drive was organised across the country.

The anniversary provided an opportunity to recall the teachings of the "great son of the Polish nation".

The main observances were held in Warsaw, with evening prayers and a night vigil in the capital’s Pilsudski Square. (vb/ss)
