Ukrainian president condemns attack on Polish consulate

Ukrainian security services have not ruled out that the incident was a terrorist attack.

"The president has strongly condemned [the attack on] the Polish General Consulate in Lutsk and has ordered the authorities to immediately use all means necessary to clarify this incident and to find those guilty," Svyatoslav Tsegolko, a spokesman for Poroshenko, said on Facebook.

The Polish consulate was fired at in the early hours of Wednesday, authorities said, adding that no one was injured.

Consul Krzysztof Sawicki told Poland’s PAP news agency that a grenade launcher was probably used in the attack.

Speaking after being called in by the Polish foreign ministry, Ukrainian ambassador to Warsaw Andrii Deshchytsia claimed Russia was behind the attack.

“The Security Service of Ukraine and state police are conducting an investigation in Lutsk,” Deshchytsia said.

“Sides which are not interested in good Polish-Ukrainian relations are behind [the attack],” he said, adding: “It is Russia without a doubt”.

Poland's President Andrzej Duda said the attack was “not just a national issue" adding that if affected "the security of our diplomatic post" and "the safety of our countrymen".

A spokesman for the Polish foreign ministry said: “At this moment we expect and demand that the security of our institutions be expanded across Ukraine”.

He added that Poland is requesting the circumstances of the incident to be clarified as soon as possible, as well as the “detention of the perpetrator or perpetrators”.
