Two-speed EU could lead to breakdown: Polish party chief

A “two-speed” future for Europe would lead to a “breakdown” of the EU, the head of Poland's ruling conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party has said.

“Only relations between states based on equality and the right to self-govern will ensure the future of the European Union,” PiS chief Jarosław Kaczyński said on Wednesday, a day after holding talks in Warsaw with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
Kaczyński said that the answer to the current crises faced by the European Union is to adapt to the diversity of individual countries.
“In our opinion, the answer lies in reforming the European Union, but in a way which empowers European countries to use this huge resource for Europe: the diversity of cultures, diversity of institutional solutions,” Kaczyński said.
He added that this “stems from the diversity of nation states”.
At an EU summit last week, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that the future of Europe could be “two-speed” in response to the current problems being faced by the bloc.
Kaczyński said that this strategy “would lead to the breakdown of the Union”. (rg)
