At an EU summit in Brussels on Thursday, Polish PM Beata Szydło protested against a European Commission CO2 limit proposal which Warsaw said would practically exclude coal from the Polish energy market.

As a result, in the conclusions from the summit, it was stressed that Poland can shape its energy mix however it wishes.

"This long, very long discussion was a success," said Szydło at a press conference in Brussels.

"These provisions [from the summit] ensure that at the level of the European Commission, we can stand up for issues concerning Polish energy," added Szydło.

On November 30, the European Commission passed a package on the shape of the energy market in the EU.

One of the proposals is a high limit on CO2 emissions for electricity generators supported with public money, which according to Poland, would practically exclude coal plants. (mol/pk)
