According to the Swedish Ministry of Defence, two Russian Bujan-M corvettes, which can carry nuclear weapons, arrived in the Baltic on Tuesday evening.
Macierewicz, who on Wednesday was in Brussels for a meeting of NATO defence ministers, said: "This is an obvious cause for concern.”
He added: “The movement of such ships into the Baltic Sea, as rightly emphasized by the Swedish Ministry of Defence, changes the balance of power on the Baltic and is a serious matter."
Media have reported that the Russian ships would probably head for the Kaliningrad exclave bordering Poland.
Sweden’s Aftonbladet newspaper reported that the Russian ships were equipped with long-range missiles with a much greater reach than the Iskander missiles Russia recently moved to Kaliningrad.
