“This is a great miracle for me because my neighbours were killed. I was miraculously rescued by the emergency services. You could say that I was born again,” the priest, Krzysztof Kozłowski, told Poland’s TVN broadcaster.

Father Kozłowski said that he was asleep in his apartment when the first tremors hit.

An earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale struck the central part of Italy on Wednesday at 3.36 am, approximately 80 km southeast of Perugia and around 150 km from Rome.

Since then, there have been numerous aftershocks in the region. Italian authorities have announced that at least 247 people have been killed and 368 injured. The numbers are likely to increase over the coming days.

Polish Prime Minister Beata Szydło sent condolences to her Italian counterpart on Wednesday.
