Police in Spain have arrested two Polish men in connection with a bizarre series of robberies in Catalonia.

Since mid-May, travellers on a bus route between Barcelona North train station and Girona airport had reported that items from their luggage had gone missing while in the hold.

Police were reportedly unconvinced by such a theory, but they launched an investigation nonetheless.

Three days into the operation, all was apparently revealed. A man was spotted trying to load a suspiciously large case onto a bus leaving for Barcelona. When the baggage was opened, it turned out that there was a second man inside, equipped with a torch. What's more, he was brandishing a laptop that did not belong to him.

The Spanish press has described a routine whereby one man sat back and enjoyed the scenery from the upper section of the bus, whilst his accomplice rifled around the luggage belonging to the other passengers, cherry-picking the best items available. Before arriving at the destination, the alleged robber would bundle himself back into his bag.

Krzysztof M. (29) and Jaroslaw G. (31) have been arrested on suspicion of theft. Airport operators are now trying to investigate the scale of the alleged crimes, in a bid to track down other missing property. (nh)
