Five Poles were among the crew of the American ship, which sank off the Bahamas during a hurricane, killing all aboard. Engine problems are believed to have been a possible cause of the disaster.
A former chief engineer of the El Faro, James Robinson, told an inquiry in Jacksonville, Florida, that the Polish sailors were not responsible for the vessel’s engines.
Robinson said he did not believe that any of the Poles could have caused the catastrophe.
The El Faro, which measured 241 metres (790ft), sank while sailing between Florida and Puerto Rico. Contact was lost on 1 October. The wreck of the ship was found at the bottom of the ocean two weeks later. (pk)
