The White House has confirmed that US President Barack Obama will spend two days in Poland in late May, as part of a four-nation tour of Europe.

After meetings with government leaders in Ireland, Great Britain and France, Barack Obama will have talks with President Bronislaw Komorowski and Prime Minister Donald Tusk in Warsaw on 27 and 28 May.

The White House has said in a statement that President Obama will visit Poland “at the invitation of Bronislaw Komorowski, given during his visit to Washington on 8 December last year."

“The President’s trip will further strengthen the close alliance between United States and Poland,” the White House statement adds.

This will be Barack Obama’s first trip to Poland. The US head of state was scheduled to participate in the funeral in Krakow last April of President Lech Kaczynski, who died in the Smolensk air crash. The Icelandic volcanic ash cloud prevented him from attending, however. (pg)
